As is unfolded in the picture above, we can see that many people, old and young, men and women, are siting in front of a computer and surfing online in a gigantic “web” that is separated into many small cubicles. The caption in the drawing reads: “The Internet: near or far”.
The purpose of the drawing is to show us that the Internet as a communication tool has both its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, many people hold a view that Internet makes us closer than ever before. With the development of science and technology, computers and the Internet are playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives. We can achieve immediate communication via E-mail, QQ, MSN or ICQ. On the other hand, others argue that the Internet weakens relationships among people. It can be easily spotted that some people may chat with strangers online for hours, but may refuse to talk to their families or friends face to face for even a minute.
From what has been mentioned above, we may reasonably arrive at the conclusion that the Internet may draw us nearer, but could also set us further apart. Therefore, it is necessary for us to use the Internet in a reasonable way and take prompt initiatives to eliminate the negative effects concerned. Only in this way can we take advantage of the Internet and live in a more harmonious society.
